Dear Universe,

I’ve always liked the number 12—probably because my birthday is January 12th.  But throughout my life 1’s and 2’s and 12’s have popped up as significant numbers for me.

When I was in grad school, my favorite professor did a lecture, several actually, on the significance of 12.  He felt that many books were written in a twelve part structure and he was determined to show us the light.

He did make some compelling arguments.  Besides, he reasoned, 12 pops up all over the place, in various religions and in life.

There’s 12 months in a year, 12 hours on a clock, 12 signs in the zodiac, 12 in a dozen, 12 inches in a foot, 12 grades in school, 12 members of a jury… and of course the 12 days of Christmas.

Some people never miss a chance to make a wish when a clock shows 12:12.  So the date 12-12-12?  Well, it was bound to catch some attention.

I did some research and discovered that some consider the number 12 to be a sign of universal fulfillment.  That may be why people are planning rituals (Earth healing anyone?), wishing, celebrations (for anyone turning 12, it seems especially magical) and weddings (thousands more than typical.  I’m actually attending one this evening.)

There will even be a concert at Madison Square Garden with performances by Alicia Keys, Billy Joel, The Rolling Stones, Bruce Springsteen, Kanye West and Eddie Veder all to assist in Hurrican Sandy relief.  Since the concert will stream live through various social media outlets, it’s expected that over 2 billion people will have access to watching it.

I also read the next time another date like this will occur is 01-01-01 (as in 2101).  That’s a long time from now.  It kind of makes you wonder if there is something special about today.

I guess the only thing we can do, unless you have some rituals planned, is make the most of today, like we should every day.

And if something magical happens?  Well, recognize it and give thanks—twelve times.  🙂

With Gratitude,

A
