“Take time to do what makes your soul shine and you will radiate light wherever you go.”

Dear Universe,

I can’t believe I am back on Martha’s Vineyard for a two week stay.  For a while I wasn’t sure it would work to return this year, so when the trip came together a little at the last minute, I was thrilled.

I feel so grateful to once again have this opportunity to focus on my writing among other writers, and the beautiful scenery here on the island.

(some signs I saw on arrival!)

Here’s the thing.  I dedicate time almost every day to writing or reading or inspiration seeking.  But life is constantly calling.  There is laundry to be done, phone calls to make, appointments to keep,  people to care for, work to do, meals to prepare, and the list goes on and on.  Some days it can be difficult to set aside the time I want for my writing.

I think a lot of us have that problem.  We are so focused on our to-do lists, and what our demands are that we don’t always make time for what we want to be doing.  We are so focused making a life, we forget to actually stop and enjoy living it.

I am incredibly lucky to be able to leave home for two weeks and focus on these passions of mine, but I know not everyone can and I realize at some point I may not be able to myself.

This got me wondering: How can we, in the middle of everyday life, make sure we are setting aside time for the things that are important to us?

I know this is a problem because it seems everyone I love has a hard time fitting in the things that bring them the most joy.

We are so focused on responsibilities and other people’s joy, we often neglect our own.  It feels like we are being selfish or indulgent when we say no to others, but we have no problem saying no to ourselves.

Now, I certainly am not suggesting we throw all our relationships and responsibilities aside and become irresponsible and fancy free.  But I am suggesting we check in more with what feels right to us.  I am suggesting that now and again we put ourselves first so we can then give back to others in a more loving, fulfilling way—a way that energizes, not drains us.

I am not sure I have the answer to this question—on how this sacred time can be part of our everyday life no matter what is going on—but I think being aware is a good place to start.  I think starting small—even with just ten minutes to ourselves—can make a world of difference.

What will you do today to satisfy your soul?  (Tweet that!)

I know I will.
