Take the First Step

“Make a move. Any move will do. But staying still is just that—staying still.”

Dear Universe,

Sometimes you don’t know where to begin.

You have a big goal in mind. You have a vision you want to bring to life. You see a future version of your destiny that is calling your name. And you want these things more than you’ve ever wanted anything. The certainty in your soul feels as strong and as persistent as the waves in the ocean.

Incessant. Never ending. Omnipresent.

But you don’t know where to begin. It feels daunting.

You don’t know how it will come to be. That scares you more than you’d like to admit.

But that’s just noise (insert ego). And noise is there to distract you. If you always listen to the noise, you’ll stay where you are indefinitely—never reaching for more, never living the life you dream of.

Instead? You simply have to make a commitment that you are going for it.

In other words, just take the first step already.

The Universe will conspire to help you as soon as you show up.

“You don’t need to know how the Universe is going to rearrange itself.” ~Rhonda Byrne

That first step will lead to a cascade of others.

I want to tell you the first step is the scariest—and it very well might be—but there’s no guarantee of what’s ahead. Your second, third and fourth steps may come easily, and steps five and six may make you stumble.

So be it.

Once you commit and step forward to bravely move in the direction calling your name, you simply have to trust you are being led.

Because you are.

“She was never quite ready. But she was brave. And the Universe listens to brave.” ~Rebecca Ray

Who cares if it doesn’t work out the way you imagined?

Maybe it will be better than that.

Who cares if you decide halfway there that you need to move in a new direction?

That’s called growth and progress.

And frankly, who cares if sometimes it’s hard, if not everyone “gets” what you’re doing?

Life is too short to live for the opinions of others. Let your opinion be the one that matters most.

I remember years ago taking a leave of absence from my job. I had imagined leaving that job plenty of times through the years, but never did. But one day (after a traumatic experience shook me to the core) the decision was instant. I went to the place I’d called home for years, packed my things into boxes, shoved them all in my car—pretty sure I wouldn’t be returning—having no idea where I was going next.

The destination didn’t matter; I just knew I no longer belonged there. That was all the information I needed.

I also had this strong sense that it was time for me to move on, that something more was waiting for me, if only I would commit to discovering it.

Once you know you want more, or that don’t want to be somewhere, or that you’ve outgrown your life, or that you’re simply living in the safety of your comfort zone, well—it’s kind of hard to shake that off.

Was it terrifying to take a leap into the unknown?

Hell yes.

Did I let that stop me?

Hell no.

When you know you’re no longer where you are meant to be or when you know that there is a force rising in your soul calling you, nagging at you, begging you to take that first step, eventually it gets too hard to ignore.

Eventually it’s not this tiny whisper in your soul. It becomes a booming, authoritative shout that you simply cannot quiet or subdue.

That’s what happened to me.

So I took the first step, and then another. I asked for help along the way. I listened to myself more. I leaned into my intuition and trusted where it was pointing. I paid attention to synchronicities and unexpected blessings.

I gave thanks, each and every single day, trusting that the twists and turns would make sense someday. I surrendered the need to know exactly where I was heading, knowing my inner compass was stronger than it had ever been and that was enough.

And before I knew it a path was unfolding before me.

We rarely know all the answers. In fact, we almost never do.

None of us have a crystal ball that shows us what’s to come. We’re not supposed to.

But if we live our lives being true to ourselves—listening to our hearts, paying attention to our soul’s whispers, and being brave enough to take that first step—the chances are it will end up better than you could have ever hoped for.

Because no road is as beautiful than the one you’re meant to be on.
